Practical check for a robust waste diagnosis

  1. Separate observation from measurement: what is visible, how often does it occur and what is the impact?
  2. Clarify customer value and the required process purpose before classifying a step as waste.
  3. Prioritize causes rather than symptoms and check effects on safety, quality and delivery performance.
  4. Assign each action a baseline, target and accountable owner.

Applying Waste in a project

Observed waiting, travel, inventory or rework should first be assessed against customer value and necessary process purpose before an activity is classified as waste.

Before applying Waste, define the objective, system boundary and decision to be supported. The distinction from adjacent methods and systems is equally important: which processes are included, which interfaces remain outside the scope and which metrics indicate an improvement? This prevents a term from becoming a label and avoids local optimisation that creates new problems elsewhere.
