Manufacturing concept - achieve goals, stay competitive

A manufacturing concept is an effective tool in the course of a production strategy. It defines the basic orientation of your production for the manufacture of goods and services. With a manufacturing concept, the goals of the company can be achieved as well as the competitiveness can be maintained or improved.

The various manufacturing processes must be used to create a manufacturing concept. These are classified in DIN 8580 according to common process principles.

When creating a manufacturing concept, the first step is to keep track of possible manufacturing technologies. This helps when asking questions, for example, about alternative processes. There are a total of six main groups, which include several groups, subgroups, processes and process variants.

Cast

If a workpiece is produced from a shapeless material, this is referred to as a primary molding process. The processes in this group include casting, which uses molten starting materials, and sintering, which uses powders, pastes and granulates. The generative manufacturing processes, which include 3D printing, for example, can also be classified as primary molds.

Separate

In these processes, workpieces are modified by breaking down the material cohesion. Possible processes for a manufacturing concept include machining such as sawing, drilling, planing and milling, flame cutting, spark erosion, shear cutting and dismantling.

Forming

In this process, solid workpieces are produced by permanently changing their shape. These include rolling, bending, deep drawing, extrusion and drop forging.

Joining

If workpieces are joined in the long term, this is referred to as joining. This includes, for example, welding, soldering, gluing, riveting, screwing and assembling.

Coating

In this process, a formless substance is applied to a workpiece as a firmly adhering layer. Examples are painting, hot-dip galvanizing, powder coating and electroplating.

Change material properties

If the properties of a material are changed, this process falls into this main group. Examples of this are annealing and hardening.
